Tom Lager has enjoyed thirty plus years of fly fishing experience mixed with a passion to share the ecological wonders and values of aquatic insects and their association with the trout we fish. While active in Fox Valley Trout Unlimited, numerous other opportunities have also arisen for Tom to teach, present and
write about “the bugs of trout streams” to a wide range of audiences such as youth fish camps, Trout Unlimited chapters and statewide meetings as well as to numerous community civic and conservation organizations. Tom’s retirement from careers as an aquatic ecologist and corporate technology developer now permits him time to advocate for the cold-water resources of Central Wisconsin. Tom’s presentation on “The Grannom, aka Black Caddisflies, of Wisconsin” focuses on why learning the habitats and behaviors of the Grannom life stages provides insights useful for fly fishing in all seasons of the year. Grannom caddisflies occupy the same habitats as do trout throughout Wisconsin and are a significant food source for trout. Each life stage of the Grannom exhibits unique behaviors that elicit specific trout responses which, if considered by fishers, enhances fishing success. Pictures and videos will be used in the presentation to show how Grannom and trout habitat and behaviors interact with each other. The meeting on Wednesday, March 5th will be at our same meeting location, the Thirsty Goat restaurant, 3040 Cahill Main, Fitchburg. Here is a link to the Thirsty Goat’s website. The presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and conversation at 5:30 p.m. Visitors and guests are always welcome.
